Sloan, Earl Lewis, of Dayton, Ohio, died in his sleep on Thursday, July 7 2011. He wasÊ94. Earl was born on January 10, 1917, in Bruin, Kentucky, son to Watt Sloan andÊJuda Ann Lewis; eldest brother to Francis, William, and Sarah; step-son to RuthÊLowe; husband of Letitia Myrtle Greene from 1947 until her passing in 2006; andÊfather to Timothy, Thomas, and John. Earl Sloan was a self-made man. He choseÊwork over formal schooling, becoming supervisor of the casting department at AcmeÊPrecision Casting. He neglected to mention that he had never attended high schoolÊin order to enlist in the U. S. Navy during World War II, rising to the rank of AviationÊBoatswainÕs Mate Second Class. He supervised as many as thirty-two able-bodiedÊseamen aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown. The end of the war found him inÊJapan as part of the allied occupation. He returned to Ohio to marry his childhoodÊfriend Letitia, who had been working as a riveter in a defense plant and with whomÊhe had corresponded while serving in the Pacific theatre. While taking night classesÊat the University of Dayton, he pursued a career as an industrial engineer at GHRÊFoundry, becoming the superintendent of manufacturing, and where he workedÊuntil he retired. Most recently he resided happily at the Trinity RetirementÊCommunity in Beavercreek. He was a member of the Belmont United MethodistÊChurch. He will be remembered as an avid reader, a gentleman farmer, a beekeeper,Êand someone who knew the value of an education. He is survived by his brother Bill, sister Sarah, and his son John.
